Printful and Embroidery

Create custom products!

Are you a team captain, booster parent, PTA member, who might be looking for a way to make shirts, hoodies, hats or more for your group? Or are you creative and want to find a fun way to supplement your income? If you’re answer to either of these questions is “yes” then Printful just might be the solution to your needs. One of the many features you can find with Printful is embroidery.  With printful you can create products that you can sell or even just use for getting swag for your team.

Why embroidery?

Embroidery has been around for a long time. It is classy and looks awesome. with Printful and embroidery you can create your own classy, fun, and trendy products. Design your teams baseball caps and t shirts with your personal touch that shows who your team is and what they represent.

How it Works:

If you are asking “How can I do this?”,  here is your answer. You can create custom products that are embroidered by first creating your design. If you do not have graphic you’d like to use you have the option of using the quick designs, clip arts, and/or just using text. Once you are on Printful you follow these steps to create your product:

  1. Choose your product: your choices include hats, jackets, beanies and more. There are more than 130 products to choose from.
  2.  Add your design
  3. Submit your order – for the month of February the digitalization fee is waived.
  4. Set up your own store.

When creating your design for a product with embroidery keep it simple and minimalistic. Embroidery is not printing so if your design has  things  like shadows,  gradients, or textures your the embroidery will not work out right. It is best to use vector based designs for your embroidered products.

There is a one time fee for each digitized file. The fees are based on the type and placement that standard fee is $6.50 for most files. When ordering 25+ products in a single order the fee is waived. With that in mind if you are looking for baseball caps for your team, youth group, or any other group that you are associated with you can create the design for the cap and do a bulk purchase of 25 or more and that fee is waived. Cool right? Think about the backstage moms and the dads cheering in the stands, they love the swag to wear while bragging about their kiddos.

Printful does have a subscription service you can sign up for that waives the fees associated with embroidered products. You can learn more about that here.

The Basics:

If you’re all new to how to do this, printful has amazing support you find how how to do it. To learn the basics of creating embroidery files for example they have an easy to follow guide, which you can find here. To create your own products following the products guidelines is easy peasy. Each product gives you detailed guidelines for creating your design and each also has templates that you can download for use to guide you in creating the design. You have the option to order samples of your product after you have designed it.

What are some common mistakes? Common mistakes that can affect your product are using text that is too small, not legible, or having lines that are too thin. For text it is recommended that you use 0.25” in height and at least 0.05” thick. The minimum recommended line thickness is 0.05”.  For embroidery simple fonts like Arial, Helvetica, Myriad pro are recommended.

Theres a few stitch types, which are: flat embroidery, 3D puff, or partial 3D puff.

Flat Embroidery is most often associated with embroidery and it can be done both on hats and apparel. This one is great for fine details, but remember to keep your design simple. Keep in mind that there are limits which are that the  minimum thickness of shapes you can use for flat embroidery is 0.05″, and the maximum is 0.5″. This type of embroidery is also great for text. Keep in mind the requirements that text can be no smaller than 0.3″ tall for upper case letters and 0.25″ The design maker tool in Printful will warn you if your design is too big or too small.

Stay minimalistic

As mentioned before it’s best to stay minimalistic. When you do that your design will look its best. Avoiding lines and text that are too small will keep your design legible. Minimalistic designs can be striking and look awesome. For example you can have a basic design with minimal details and it can look great. Look at the image in this post for an example of how a minimalistic design can look on a product.

Another thing to keep in mind is the thread count. Printful has 15 color options, but there is a limit of using 6 colors per design. When using multiple colors make sure you keep in mind that the design is big enough so that when it’s sewn how you want it to look.

How can I create my designs?

There are many options for you to create you designs. You could use programs like Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or Corel Photoshop Pro to name a few. Have a tight budget? If so check out this free vector based software that you could use as well called Inkspace. You can also the option of using the tools in Printful’s Design Maker.

Keep in mind that for embroidery you cannot use photographic imagery like photos. Designs need to be vector based.
