Autism Acceptance
As we are approaching April, which is Autism Awareness Month I wanted to share the catalog of T-Shirts I have for showing support and awareness to Autism. Autism awareness is a wonderful thing, but in my opinion Autism acceptance is much more important.
I am a mama to 2 girls on the Autism Spectrum. So awareness and acceptance is very important to me.
Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects a person’s social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation. While you will see similarities Autism affects all differently.
When you’ve met one person with Autism, you’ve met ONE person with Autism.
I have 2 girls on the spectrum. While both have are similar in a couple of ways they are both affected by their Autism differently. My oldest is mainly affected socially and is non verbal. My youngest is affected mainly by social skills and behavior skills. Both stim to help them deal with the world around them when feeling stressed or overwhelmed.
Somethings you may see in an individual with Autism is being non verbal, having difficulty with understanding social situations, difficulty in understanding and recognizing feelings of others and maintaining a conversation. But do not mistake difficulty in understanding feelings of others and thinking they are not capable of empathy. A person with Autism is very capable of empathy, they just may not be able to express it in the same way that a neurotypical person can.
You can learn more about Autism at the Autism Society website.
